It seems that some places are marked—almost permanently—for suffering, hardship, and loss. Even though to us, visiting travelers, they may appear as paradise, fate often shows them little mercy.
Short moments of calm between storms and upheavals are just enough for those who live there to regain a bit of faith… only to face the next blow with quiet resilience. Yet their situation does not improve. The scars remain. The death or injury of loved ones, the loss of a home, the disappearance of a lifetime’s modest possessions…
Indifference is not an option. We can try—at least a little—to help, to ease the burden they carry.
